Recommend some Pulp fantasy/Sci-fi
After listening to Blood of Ambrose on Audible, I'm again excited about the genre. So I'm looking for recommendations of more pulpy fantasy and sci-fi, preferably stuff that's actually in print, and/or on Audible. Thanks.

p.s. I'm really upset that Wagner's stuff is OOP. That's a darn shame.

John Carter of Mars (and the rest of the series) by Edgar Rice Burrows springs to mind. You can grab them free via Project Gutenberg and I'm sure the they are on Audible.

Enjoy them now before Disney messes them up in 2012 Wink

I recommend Doc Savage, anything Pelucidar or Barsoom, also Pigeons from Hell.

Not sure if these qualify but they're pretty old anyway ! I thought both were pretty good.

RE: Recommend some Pulp fantasy/Sci-fi
I second John Carter, adding the Venus series as well just for completeness. Edgar Rice Burroughs was one of the first and a lot of fun.
Doc Savage is another good one. I think DC Comics is coming out with a Doc Savage series soon.
I enjoyed E. E. Smith's Skylark and Lensmen series.

There are *lots* of fun sci-fi and fantasy from the pulp era. Just don't expect character development or deep plots or good science. So much of our knowledge of science has changed since then.

I think that the stories can be hard to get into if you didn't discover them as a young teenager. They were novel and wondrous as a young teenager. It may also be a function of raw age; young teenagers reading the same pulps I read at 13 might find them boring compared to Harry Potter novels, much less the movies that are out now.

That said, I applaud your efforts to track down good pulp stories. Let us know how it goes.

I would recommend: the Ringworld series by Larry Niven. This series deserves the title of classic since the initial novel turns 40 years old this year and is a seminal work of hard science fiction.

When I hear 'pulp fantasy' I think sword & sorcery, in which case I would recommend people like Robert E. Howard (Conan, Kull), Fritz Leiber (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser) and Michael Moorcock (Elric of Melniboné).
